During my twenties, I was searching for the right trade when I discovered a German-owned woodworking shop. The owner, an elderly German craftsman with three generations of experience in antique restoration and fine furniture, was looking for a young apprentice to pass his knowledge to skills that are now rare in modern practice. In 1990, my journey in this craft began. He always said there was only one way “the German way.” With that mindset, I committed myself to learning his family’s methods for restoring and finishing fine furniture. After 35 years, I’m proud to be a master finisher. Today, that legacy continues through my son, who also loves working with antiques. That is how we founded Finishing Details LLC, dedicated to providing top-quality service to fellow antique lovers.
Artistry in Liquid Metal
My journey didn’t stop there. Around 2015, I was hired by a company dedicated to cold plating, or liquid metal. There, I learned and mastered this technique. Combined with my rigorous discipline and experience in traditional finishing, I evolved my craft to focus on the transformative power of surface aesthetics.Restoration is more than repairing wood or touching up finishes; it’s about honoring the soul and “skin” of each piece. This led us to specialize in cold plating, an intricate process that applies real liquid metals like brass, copper, and bronze to many types of surfaces. By combining structural integrity with luxurious metallic finishes, we turn ordinary pieces into extraordinary works of art. Every project we take on at 1965 West Pershing Rd, Chicago, IL 60609, follows the exacting standards I learned decades ago, now combined with this new technique, ensuring durable, sophisticated results that respect both the past and the future of fine artisan design.
Our Story
Around 2012, I had the opportunity to work in a warehouse store full of fine furniture shipped from France, where I was in charge of restoring and refinishing many rare pieces. This experience put my knowledge to the test every day, especially with club chairs and old fine leather, where I mastered leather restoration and color matching—skills I now offer at Finishing Details LLC.
